Pernicious anaemia (Biermer's disease) is a form of anaemia caused by a lack of vitamin B<12. Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, supports the formation of erythrocytes and thus has an essential function in blood formation. Vitamin B12 only occurs in animal foods in significant amounts. The supply of vitamin B12 depends not only on the content in the food, but also on absorption with the intrinsic factor secreted in the stomach. Particular risk groups for vitamin B12 deficiency and thus the occurrence of pernicious anemia are elderly people and patients with chronic gastritis. Due to the lack of intrinsic factor, these groups of people have a reduced vitamin B12 intake, which should be covered by additional vitamin B12 doses. Also with purely vegan nourishing way should be paid attention to a sufficient Vitamin B12-Zufuhr.
