The ribwort plantain belongs to the plantain family (Plantaginaceae). Its original home is Europe, but it is now found all over the world. In addition to mucilage, tannins and saponins, it also contains other bioactive plant substances. Nowadays ribwort plantain is used in the form of tea, juice, syrup or ointments. In time of scarcity it was also consumed as a substitute for salad greens. |

Ribwort Plantain has an anti-irritant, astringent and antibacterial effect and is mainly used for catarrhs of the airways and inflammatory changes of the oral and pharyngeal mucosa. The constituent iridoids, aucubin and Catalpol have a preferential antiphlogistic effect (1). |
